Don’t have a charity in mind yet? Allow us to introduce our personal favorites. We believe their projects have proven to be scalable, cost-effective, and dedicated to their community.

Global charities include large, multinational NGOs that have repeatedly proven their ability to have an impact on vulnerable communities around the world. Many are guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which provide “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.”

Given the global differences in costs of living, global charities offer a way to reach many more people in developing countries through the multiplier effect of purchasing power. In 2015, 46% of the world’s population lived on under $5.50 per day.

Local charities target a specific issue or constituency and can showcase a tangible impact when doing so. Many of these organizations work on addressing social issues present in New York City, where most of our members are based, while other organizations are based in other major U.S. regions.

If you have a desire to get involved in charitable work beyond financial support, these organizations offer a great way to do so. Many have volunteering or mentorship programs we would be happy to help you get involved in.

Amenuveve

Global - Volta Region, Ghana

Amenuveve, Inc., an NGO founded by NYU Stern professors, their undergraduate students and local Ghanaian leaders.

Amenuveve is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the U.S. and Ghana. Our mission is to uplift and empower deprived rural villages in Ghana’s Volta Region. These communities depend on subsistence farming and fishing to support their families; however, pollution has seriously depleted local fishing, irrigation is lacking and viable businesses do not exist. This non-profit arose from the NYU Stern course - Social Entrepreneurship in Ghana (SEG). For over 6 years (and ongoing) NYU Stern undergraduate business students have traveled, with their professors, to these villages incubating community owned enterprises that target economic development, food insecurity, education and health. This has led to the establishment of an artisan batik & tie dye center, a sewing unit, a vegetable farm business and an elementary school/computer lab. A scholarship program, spearheaded by NYU Stern alumni enables students to attend secondary/senior high schools and a bi-weekly SEG Virtual Reading Club – awarded the 2021 NYU Alumni Association Innovation of the Year Award - motivates student engagement through reading during the pandemic.

A new business enterprise - Reusable Sanitary Pads – “Volta Pads” – will provide women and girls with a safe, affordable and sustainable way to practice menstrual hygiene and create new employment opportunities for the community’s sewing apprentice program.

Target areas: economic empowerment, education, artisan business, vegetable farming, women’s health

Note: All donations directly fund projects – no administrative costs assessed.

This comes as the organization has seen huge shortfalls in humanitarian aid due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UNICEF is attempting to address this crisis by treating cases of severe acute malnutrition (SAM), scaling up emergency water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) assistance, providing educational resources to out-of-school children, and funding the Yemen Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) project.
